It looks like Marvel will be getting a new batch of Guardians after Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Earlier this week in the midst of all the excitement over the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn confirmed on social media that he'd be writing and directing the film's sequel Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

However, after speaking in an interview with Screen Rant, Gunn revealed that the third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy might actually be the last time fans see Chris Pratt's Star Lord and his growing team of cosmic thugs-turned-heroes.

Screen Rant: I know you stated that you'll be back for Guardians 3 obviously, and you said that's the end. Does that mean that's the end of the team past phase 4 or is it your end of the team?

James Gunn: It means it's the end of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeah.

This may come as disappointing news for fans. We've all come to love the antics of Gunn's crazy bunch of cosmic superheroes and it'll be hard to imagine an Marvel Cinematic Universe with a separate set of Guardians. However, the franchise would need new characters if it were to truly grow, and we're sure that the next set of Guardians would have their own charm.

For now let's enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which will officially see release on May 5, 2017.
