James Gunn Has Finished The First Draft Of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 - But There's A Problem

After the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn has now come onboard for a third Guardians movie, and the good news is, he's just finished the first draft of the script. The bad news, however, is that he's having a problem with the general MCU canon.

During the World Building Panel at E3, Gunn had this to say about his work on the third Guardians movie:

"I'm writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I'm excited about it. I feel really great about it. But there's one little thing that I had in the first movie. Now, Marvel Canon, MCU, is crazy. There's the 616 universe which is the Marvel Comics Universe, which people get hung up on that canon, and then there's the MCU, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has a separate canon. I did something in the first movie of Guardians where it was in the background but it was distinctly there, and people know that it's there. And I'm like goddammit. Because I have a really good storytelling reason for breaking the canon, and I stayed up last night figuring out if I'm gonna do it or not. I still don't know."

It's very curious what he could be referring to from the first Guardians movie. My instinct says that it has something to do with the supposed "cocoon" of Adam Warlock which would be spotted in the hall of the Collector. The ending of Vol. 2 confirms that Adam will now have an origin with the Sovereign, and we do see a more updated version of the cocoon, so it's possible that he's totally scrapping the "original" Easter Egg.

I can't tell what else could possibly be so integral to Vol. 3 that's hinted at in the first Guardians, but I'm guessing that it will be a relic of some sort or another space McGuffin.

And here I am just hoping that the third movie finally gives us Cosmo the space dog in the group. He is on the Disneyland ride.
