James Gunn Denies Marvel Studios vs DC Films Rivalry

There might be a long-standing rivalry between a sector of the Marvel and DC fanbases, however, Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad director James Gunn believes that the rivalry isn't shared by Marvel Studios and DC Films.

Taking to Twitter, the director who's landed films in both the DC Extended Universe and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to respond to a fan asking about the supposed rivalry between DC Films and Marvel Studios.

"Honest to God, I can't remember anyone at either Marvel or DC ever condemning the other company," Gunn replied in his post on Twitter, "in I think there's probably slightly less competition between Marvel & DC than between Marvel or DC & all other movies. After all, we are in very similar boats, relatively speaking."

While it's pretty clear that there are Marvel fans and DC fans who love to debate which franchise is stronger, Marvel Studios and DC films rarely try to compete against each other. Filmmakers, actors, and actresses from both sides tend to support each other, praising each others' work when they release. To Marvel and DC, a win for one is a win for everyone.

Gunn should feel the same way as well. The filmmaker first wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for Marvel Studios. When he was fired after an alt-right extremist created a smear campaign by digging up decade-old tweets that the filmmaker made, Gunn was then hired to work on The Suicide Squad for DC. After that, the director was rehired by Disney and is now set to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Suicide Squad is set to premiere on August 6, 2021.
