James Gunn Confirms No Thanos nor Infinity Stones in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Writer/director James Gunn has confirmed via a Q&A on his Facebook page that there will absolutely be no Thanos nor Infinity Stones in Guardians of the GalaxyVol. 2. Gunn has reiterated on the fact that the movie will be independent of the Avengers, so this current report isn't that surprising anymore.

Nevertheless, Guardians of the Galaxy gave a considerable amount of screen time on the Mad Titan and the Infinity Stones despite it being a standalone Marvel film. Because of this, fans hoped to see him and the stones in the sequel. Apparently, fans thought wrong.

Gunn clarified Thanos' absence in Guardians of the GalaxyVol. 2 and said:

Thanos will not appear in Vol. 2. No. As I've said before, Thanos isn't in this movie. I think he's gonna have a little bit to do and say when it comes to a certain wars and infinity. We've got other fish to fry in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

When it came to the Infinity Stones, Gunn quashed all hopes of them ever appearing in the upcoming film when he said:

We're not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2. Is that a spoiler? It's not really a thing.

I was kind of hoping before that Thanos and the stones will somehow be included in the film. However, while these new statements from Gunn indefinitely scratches potential plot material in the sequel, I have to admit that it's a breath of fresh air knowing that it isn't another film related to the Avengers. It's also good to see that other Marvel stories can stand on their own without needing a plot tie-in in the shared universe.

Other solid details about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 remains unknown. What we do know is that apart from cast additions, there will be a scripted post-credits scene and filming is set to begin on February 11.

Hopefully, Gunn will be able to evoke the same emotions we had when the first movie was released.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2017.
