James Cameron Reveals The Main Villain in Avatar Sequels

James Cameron, who's currently developing on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5, has revealed who will be the main villain in the upcoming sequels.

In Empire's September 2017 issue (via IGN), Cameron confirmed that Stephen Lang's character, Colonel Quartich will return to become the main antagonist in each sequel, right up through the fifth Avatar film. It's still not clear how the villain will return in the next Avatar film. Quartich stirred a lot of trouble for Jake and the Na'vi in the first Avatar movie, and his conflict with them will continue to develop in the next four films. "The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it's pretty much the same characters," Cameron said.

While the Avatar sequels will feature new characters and environments, Cameron said that "it's not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There's not a new villain every time." Instead, the filmmaker is "taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey."

Cameron also talked about the challenging of filming four movies at once, and Stephen Lang described the scheduling situation as a "Mongolian cluterf-k." According to Cameron, Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings trilogy inspired him to do it this way.

Avatar 2 is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2020; Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021; Avatar 4 on December 20, 2024; and Avatar 5 will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025
