IT: Will Poulter Was Originally Going To Play Pennwise Before Bill Skarsgard Was Cast

The new IT reboot looks fantastic, and the movie has been getting a lot of praises, even from novelist, Stephen King. The role of Pennywise the Clown is now being taken over by Bill Skarsgard, but Will Poulter was originally attached to star as the immortal murderer clown.

Talking to Deadline, IT director Andy Muschietti explains why Poulter didn't end up getting the role. He says:

"I was very, very intrigued by the prospect of working with Will, I always thought that he would be an amazing Pennywise. We talked a little bit about it, the idea of making the movie even though that Cary wasn't there. Will basically expressed a feeling that he had slowly disengaged from playing that character, that was so dark and terrifying. It was a personal decision I respected, but I was eager and willing to find my own Pennywise and that's what we did."

Though Poulter may be best known for his role as an awkward geek in the comedy We're the Millers, his distinct look has gotten him parts for big films like The Maze Runner, The Revenant, and the upcoming Detroit which also stars John Boyega.

As of now, it looks like the movie is doing fine with Poulter and vice-versa. IT is generating a lot of good early reviews, and Poulter is getting more and more attention onscreen. Sure he could have achieved some cult status by playing the new Pennywise, but making a name for yourself is also a good thing.

IT comes out Sept. 8.
