Injustice 2’s Randomized Loot Will Still Work for Balanced Play

When developer NetherRealm Studios confirmed Injustice 2, fans rejoiced. Then when it was announced that there will be a gear system, essentially what was seen in the biggest update for its mobile companion app, fan reactions became mixed.

Gear Drops are actually very helpful in varying the kind of fighters one can have. A mix and match of gears can make even same-level characters become very different, to match the playstyle of the player.

It's easy to see where fan unease my spring from. Random drops of gear can land some players with some very powerful pieces, while others will end up with less useful ones. Speaking to Eurogamer, NetherRealm Studios' Brian Goodman tried to detail the studio's plans for its gear.

"We anticipated what some of the hesitation might be from players and are developing intelligently to deliver something which will hopefully appeal to all of our fans, whether you're a hardcore fighting game enthusiast or a more casual fan. We're doing things to make sure people who want a pure fighting game can get that."

It seems that the developer is aiming to keep things balanced by way of modes that have a level playing field. These modes will allow gearing up more for aesthetics while keeping the character stats at a level that won't overpower players too much.

Apart from this, there will also be modes that will boost a particular aspect of a hero, such as modes that will let gear impact one's strength. Goodman did admit that online play may not enjoy the same level playing field, though matchmaking may aim to prevent mismatched opponents.

On the one hand, the gear system does give customization a whole new flavor. From playing the Injustice God Among Us mobile version, I got a glimpse of how you can make your fighter entirely different, especially when there becomes a "favorite" fighter that most players use.

It helps that NetherRealm is planning to reward loot depending on the outcome of a match, so even its randomness has some form of basis.

Injustice 2 will be out sometime in 2017 for the PS4 and Xbox One.
