Idina Menzel on ‘Give Elsa a Girlfriend’ Campaign

Earlier this month, the "Give Elsa a Girlfriend" Campaign took over the internetwhen Twitter user Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeted "I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be," and followed it with another tweet with the hashtag "#GiveElsaAGirlfriend"

The hashtag has been used since in thousands of tweets, some showing support and others giving the issue some backlash.

Now, the 44-year old voice actress and singer, who sang the Frozen hit Let It Go, is responding to the campaign.

Like many other Disney fans, Menzel said she "think it's great."

While speaking to ET at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards, Menzel addressed the social media campaign which aims to see Elsa with a same-sex partner in Frozen 2. She said:

I think it's great. Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out.

The actress also said she would support the decision through and through.

It remains to be seen whether Disney will grant fans their wishes or not. However, it's worth noting that the campaign comes after news of GLAAD campaigning for the company to include LGBT characters inStar Wars: Episode VIII.

While it may not happen in the near future, or Frozen 2 for that matter, there is hope of seeing more diversity and non hetero-centric characters in future Disney films.

Disney is slowly starting to show its support. Just last month, the companies have shown support for the LGBT community when they released a statement saying they will stop production in Georgia if the anti-gay bill in the state gets passed. It's also worth noting that Frozen already featured the first ever gay couple in a Disney film, albeit subtly.

As long as Disney is able to come up with great and non-discriminatory stories, I don't see why LGBT characters can't be part of Disney films.
