How Wonder Woman is Making Waves in Hollywood and Feminism

Wonder Woman made her big screen debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while Diana Prince wasn't the sole focus of the film, Gal Gadot's character became one of the movie's highlights, receiving praises from both critics and fans. With her own solo film set to be released next year, it might be misconstrued that the movie is catching attention for being the first movie to feature the DC female superhero. However, there's another reason why the movie is making buzz in Hollywood.

As Variety reported, Athena Film Festival artistic director Melissa Silverstein mentioned at the Cannes Film Festival how Wonder Woman has begun a positive change in Hollywood for women.

She said:

It's the first movie that a woman has directed — a live-action movie — with a $100 million budget. First.

The movie isn't the first female-led superhero movie ever, but it is the most-talked about right now. It's a surprising, and quite honestly, underwhelming fact. Clearly, Hollywood is lacking female superheroes at the forefront of films.

Currently, the comic book and superhero film genre are all led by male characters, and while there have been female stars in Marvel's current slate of comic book films, they aren't really the focus of the film.

We are still far from seeing a host of female superhero characters leading movies, but Wonder Woman is a good start in helping boost this genre. In addition, the $100 million budget is already a financial victory in Hollywood standards.

To date, Wonder Woman remains the only superheroine film that Warner Bros. has scheduled. There's a Harley Quinn movie already in the works as well, but the release of that film remains unknown. As for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's Captain Marvel in 2019 and a Black Widow movie reportedly being considered.

Wonder Woman is certainly looking up to be quite the influential film, considering all the hype, promos, and interviews for the movie has released over the past few weeks.

Even legendary composer Hans Zimmer even thinks the film should have a female composer to really make an influence in the filmmaking industry.

We'll see if the movie is really everything WB is working it up to be when Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2, 2017.
