Chances are we won't be seeing the sequels to James Cameron's Avatar until 2020, but actor Sam Worthington promises they will be worth the wait. Based on his description, they do sound like they will rival the current epic series that's lording it now, Marvel's The Avengers.
Cameron has flatly said he is not interested in doing a superhero film, but his next Avatar sequels (which will have five installments) contain the basic elements that have made The Avengers a phenomenon. First, they will be epic in scale - that much is expected. Second, underneath all that grandeur is a story about family. And with all the tech that is infused into moviemaking, they promise to surpass anything done before.
As Worthington tells We Got This Covered:
"I've read all the scripts, they're great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he's got a family now.
"This film is going to be like nothing you've ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it's a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he's been living in the world for a while now, so what's this world he's seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic."
Worthingon's statements that Avatar will be "nothing like you've ever seen" is an echo of the Russo brothers' statements about Avengers: Infinity War.
It seems that Cameron has laid the gauntlet, and the challenge is on. What he does need - and which Avengers: Infinity War has - is a really big bad villain.
It's been a while since we've seen anything about Avatar, and the clip below can be a memory-refresher.
