Here’s Why The Walking Dead’s Next Issue Sees a Surge in Preorders

Events in The Walking Dead series is already taking a huge turn when it airs back on AMC.

However, closer to comic book fans' reach is the upcoming The Walking Dead #163, and it features just as many interesting developments. Recently, Image Comics has announced that the comic has enjoyed a big surge of its February issue, the highest so far for Direct Market's orders in almost 20 years.

As of writing, Bleeding Cool has recorded the preorder figures to have reached 755,000. Of course, there are some things that should be considered, starting with the fact that it is a discounted issue worth 25 cents. Additionally, the ordered copies of the cover variants may not necessarily equate to sales for fans.

Within the comic, The Walking Dead #163 also marks some interesting developments. There may be a new major character coming into the series via that issue alongside the start of a new storyline.

The reason this issue is getting a discount is to commemorate the partnership that comic book stores have done with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman since the anniversary.

"Comic book stores have made it easier for us to accomplish everything we've done since our last anniversary so giving back just makes sense, even though it means we're not making a dime off these books."

By them, he means himself and Image Comics. More interesting is the fact that the variant cover seems to be hinting that something big is going to happen to a major character. Digital Spy managed to obtain a copy of the variant cover. On it we can see a couple of zombie hands raised up as if towards battle. But among them is a prosthetic arm, now speculated to be Rick's.

His placement in the scene puts him smackdab in the middle of the walker crowd. But does that mean our main leader has already fallen? Or does that hint at a bigger mystery surprise given the cover of Rick donning Negan's signature leather jacket and Lucille?

We'll find out soon enough. Here's to seeing more progress in The Walking Dead world, which we'd love to see on TV too.
