Here’s Why The Canto Bight Arc In Star Wars: The Last Jedi Wasn’t Useless

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Traditional Star Wars fans have a lot to complain about Star Wars: The Last Jedi despite the film's overwhelming commercial success and the wave of positive reviews from critics. A part of the fanbase hates that writer/director Rian Johnson subverted fan expectations.

However, while the fanbase is divided on whether Snoke should have been killed this early in the sequel trilogy or not or whether Rey should have been turned into a nobody or not, the arc that held the most contempt so far is The Last Jedi's Canto Bight sequence.

What in the world did Rose's (Kelly Marie Tran) adventure with Finn (John Boyega) accomplish?

Twitter user @barsooomcore has a pretty good explanation. Though others might think that Finn and Rose's arc seemed pretty useless, the Star Wars fan explains that the whole journey was necessary for the stormtroopers-turned-Resistance-fighter's character development.

"The whole point of this story is to set up the choice for Finn: the codebreaker's cynicism or Rose's idealism? Even as they're fighting their way free, is he doing this for himself or for the Rebellion?" writes in one of his post on the Twitter thread he created to explain Rose and Finn's arc. "And we know the answer in the best exchange in the whole movie. PHASMA: You're scum. FINN: REBEL scum."

It definitely makes sense. Finn has always wanted to run away, and Johnson needed someone to help Finn make a decision for himself. In the end, he decides to align himself with the Rebel scum, fighting to help keep Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the Resistance alive.
