Here's Why Han Solo Has Partnered With Chewbacca, According To Star Wars Canon

Han Solo and Chewbacca's friendship is one of the strongest in the entire Star Wars universe, but how exactly did their special bond form? While the end of the previously existing Expanded Universe (now called Legends) erased a lot of things from Star Wars canon, new story details are refilling the empty gaps thanks to the new novels, and a new book shows the events that brought the Millennium Falcon pilots together for the first time. The book is called Aftermath: Life Debt, and fans of the previous canon will probably be familiar with how they've come together.

In the old Expanded Universe, Han Solo once saved the life of Chewbacca, so Chewie owed Han a life debt, being with him as a way to repay it, which reminds me of The Count of Monte Cristo and Jacopo in a way. As anyone coulld guess from the title of Chuck Wendig's latest novel, the basic premise did not change in the new Disney version, just a few details.

Screen Rant reports that a brief segment of the novel has Han remembering how the Galactic Empire used to treat Wookiees, and that the smuggler could no longer allow it to go on.

"I've seen what the Empire has done. They ripped down trees. They put cuffs and collars on all the Wookiees. Some of them they cut open. Others they ship off to work the worst jobs the Empire has on offer. They took his home from him. I can't abide by that. I don't have a home anymore besides the Falcon, but him? He does. And he deserves to go home. He has a family too, you know."

The book didn't provide any details on how Han saved Chewbacca, but it'll probably be revealed in the upcoming young Han Solo film, which is rumored to have the best Star Wars script ever.Aftermath: Life Debt could have revealed more details about their friendship's origins in this time period, but the majority of the novel deals with Han helping Chewbacca free the Wookiee planet of Kashyyk from Imperial control in after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The untitled Han Solo-focused Star Wars spin-off film is set to release in theaters on May 25, 2018.
