Here’s Why Captain Marvel Writing Has More Restraint Than Iron Man

If there was one major strength that the Marvel cinematic franchise has, it would have to be an impeccable narrative for each of the movies. And it is in safely adding and yet safeguarding this progression that has made each of the succeeding movies contribute well into the overall narrative.

That's why there's a challenge now for writers who are coming in with new stories and new characters as the Marvel Grand Plan unfolds. The newest to join is Captain Marvel, who will be translated into the big screen as well.

Nicole Perlman and co-writer Meg LeFauve are tasked with the responsibility to pen Captain Marvel's story. And for them, this is a pretty huge undertaking. Apart from a relatively lesser known hero, Carol Danvers is also pretty unique as the first main female superhero to star in a Marvel movie.

Speaking in a recent podcast (via CBM), Perlman revealed the biggest challenge that they faced when fleshing out captain Marvel's story.

"Marvel is a little bit of a house of cards in a sense that everything influences everything around it even if it's very modular. Figuring out where the story fits in the MCU influences things as well. She's an incredible character, but I will also say that since Marvel has done so many movies already, you really have to go out of your way to make sure her story is fresh and doesn't borrow too heavily from the other films. She's an incredibly strong and wonderful hero, but all the Marvel characters are. So you just need to bring her to life in a way that's unique to her story but in a way that honors the canon and also gearing out the roles that she needs to play with everything that's going on in the MCU."

Perlman even compared the challenge to how they are writing it compared to how a narrative script would go for a movie of Iron Man-slash-Tony Stark caliber. She added that the main challenge lies in ensuring that Captain Marvel's heroics are not overshadowed by the fact that she's a female superhero.

If anything, that should add to the overall strength. And with that comes the threat of tropes that could color the entire thing if not handled carefully, which makes balancing an interesting story and keeping tight storylines that focus on her real strengths trickier than usual.

"There are things you wouldn't think twice about Iron Man but you would think twice about for Captain Marvel."

This meticulousness is something very much appreciated in the Marvel franchise, at least for myself. It says a lot about priorities—the fact that bumping off Captain Marvel for Spider-Man: Homecoming didn't bother the writers showed that they were more concerned with ensuring that everything is smoothen out perfectly for a good story to tell.

Captain Marvel's latest release date peg is on March 2019. The movie will star Brie Larson as the titular character.
