Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie (Thessa Thompson) might be a bit different from the Valkyrior leader in the comics, Brunnhilde, however the film's producer, Brad Winderbaum, promises fans that they'll be learning a lot about what Valkyrie means to Asgard and to Odin.
While traditionally speaking, Brunhilde is a soldier of Asgard and a leader of the Choosers of the Slain, the Ragnarok producer tells Screen Rant that Marvel fans are going to find Valkyrie in a "really low place" in Taika Waititi's upcoming space buddy movie.
"Valkyrie in the comics is traditionally the character Brunhilde who comes to be known as Valkyrie… Calling someone ‘Valkyrie' is like referring to someone as ‘Soldier.' Our view of the Valkyrie in the MCU is that they were basically Odin's special ops. His SEAL Team Six. Valkyrie as we meet her in this film has definitely suffered the trauma of war, and we meet her in a really low place.
So it's not so much that we're trying to create a one-to-one emulation of Brunhilde from the comics. But certainly, the idea of the Valkyrie and what they mean to Asgard and to Odin is something that we're going to be leaning into a lot and draft a lot of ideas from the comics."
So far promotional videos and trailers for Thor: Ragnarok have presented two versions of Valkyrie – one where she serves the Grandmaster in Sakaar and one where the warrior appears in her Asgardian armor. Talking about Valkryie in Ragnarok, Winderbaum explains further:
"She's seeking redemption and she wants to face her fears and… again without giving any spoilers away, it's the basis of her character. And the fact that she's here is due in large part to her story with Thor, and Thor getting her to that emotional place."
It seems like Thor isn't the only one trying to prove his worth in Ragnarok. Hopefully the two find their redemption as they face Hela (Cate Blanchett) together.
Thor: Ragnarok makes its big debut November 3, 2017.
