Though Obi-Wan is considered an all-around nice guy in Star Wars, some fans can't help but notice that he was being a real jerk when he lied to Luke about Vader killing his father. When confronted about it, Ghost-Obi-Wan simply told Luke that what he said was "true from a certain point of view."
Sure the line doesn't sit well with some fans, but with the release of the novel Aftermath: Empire's End, it was revealed that Obi-Wan was simply quoting from Jedi scripture.
iO9 points out that there is a line in the Journal of Whills — a.k.a. The Jedi's Bible —that states:
The truth in our soul
Is that nothing is true.
The question of life
Is what then do we do?
The burden is ours
To penance, we hew.
The Force binds us all
From a certain point of view.
So Obi-Wan wasn't being a total ass when he lied to Luke about Vader. It's because his religion dictated that there was nothing wrong with doing so.
Then again, the expanded universe is known to further explain certain plot holes in the movie so they make complete sense. Why does Ponda Baba's arm bleed after Obi-Wan slices his arm off; shouldn't the blade have cauterized it? Nope, because his species' blood doesn't coagulate. Aren't parsecs a unit of distance and not time? The Kessel Run is actually a dangerous smuggler's route filled with black holes that can lead to certain death if the pilot didn't take the 18 parsec route. Han defied the odds when he flew close to the clusters in order to shorten the distance of the run to only 12 parsecs — so joke's on you, cynical fanboy.
