Earlier, we reported criticism of Hasbro for not including Rey in the new Star Wars monopoly set released in conjunction with The Force Awakens, which included Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader instead (both received minimal screentime). This prompted fans, including an 8 year girl, to write a letter to Hasbro asking why they didn't add Rey to the game. She made some great points:
"Without her, THERE IS NO FORE AWAKENS! It Awakens in her!". I love the fact that this 8 year made the perfect connection between the movie title and Rey, the main character. It felt like a stab straight to the heart of Hasbro, for excluding her from one of their more popular games.
Hasbro gave the following response:
At face value, Hasbro's response makes sense. They couldn't reveal that Rey was Force sensitive, or risk spoiling the movie. On the other hand, it would have been very easy to just include the character with her staff instead of a lightsaber. If they just did that, no spoilers are revealed and everyone could still be playing the game with one of the film's favorite characters.
Habsro further replied, "Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren...". This repsonse doesn't seem that significant to a game of Monopoly. Luke Skywalker doesn't take on Kylo, and he's included in the set. Darth Vader doesn't take on Finn, yet he's included in the set. How would including an action figure of Rey, spoil this plotline? It also seems odd, considering, Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren are the three most advertised characters in the entire film, so everyone would expect to see those characters in the game anyway.
For the sake of all the excited 8 year olds experiencing Star Wars for the first time, let's give Rey some more of the spotlight in games. A list of Rey based products are available here.
