Hans Zimmer Says DC’s Wonder Woman Movie Should Make This Change

Wonder Woman is probably one of the most anticipated superhero films of this generation. Not only is the upcoming DC film the Amazonian superheroine's debut on the silver screen, but the character herself has long been a popular icon of feminism, a relevant societal issue commonly discussed nowadays.

The film will star women in the major roles. A female director, Patty Jenkins, is also helming the film. However, if there's one thing Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer wants more to see in Wonder Woman, it's that the music should be created by women.

Zimmer spoke to Cinema Blend via phone about the role Wonder Woman had in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Asked about the significance of the artists who will compose the Wonder Woman's screen score for her first film, Zimmer said he would love to see a female composer create the music for Wonder Woman.

Zimmer explained:

I just wish I could bring more women into the whole process. The instruments, more women composers succeeding, more women filmmakers succeeding. Wonder Woman seems to be an obvious choice to meet that charge.

Zimmer said he included a bold feminine sound to the Wonder Woman theme to make the theme for the character's costumed appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, adding that he worked with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice electric cellist and percussionist Sheila E. to achieve the feeling and sound of fierce femininity.

Zimmer said:

One thing that has bugged me forever is that our superhero movies are so masculine and male generated. I wanted Wonder Woman to be… I wanted the music to be full of more female… but you know, I wanted a banshee wail, like you've never heard before.
So my friend Tina Guo, who's an amazing electric cellist, basically typecast her, because whenever she picks up her cello that very nice, very sweet, very polite, young woman turns into a warrior princess in one go… There is a different sound you get from the drummers when we have Sheila E. playing amongst them. It just gives you a different sound.
It gives you just as much ferocity, but it's a different type, so we were looking at things like that.

Indeed, looking closely at superhero films over the past decades, they have been incredibly male-dominated. It's the first time that a female superhero will be the center of a popular comic book film, except maybe Catwoman and Elektra in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In the Oscars as well, there had only ever been two winning female composers for Best Original Score.

Wonder Woman may not be the solution to this male-dominated section of the film industry, but it certainly wouldn't hurt hiring a female composer into the mix.
