Han Solo Spinoff May Be Keeping May 2018 Premiere Date Despite Production Shake-Up

There was a lot of commotion in the Star Wars community last month after Lucasfilm announced that it had fired Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The film had already been deep in production when the announcement was made and not only did the departure of the two filmmakers spark discussions on whether Lucasfilm was too tight on its directors, it also delayed the production of the film.

Initially expected to end this month, the end date of principal photography for Han Solo has been moved to the first week of September, causing fans to whether the film would also see a delay in release.

Despite these concerns, it looks like Lucasfilm is still hoping to have Han Solo spinoff premiere in May next year. According to a report by Brick Fanatics, the LEGO Star Wars merchandise for Han Solo is still set for April 20 next year with the standalone still scheduled for May 2018.

"Brick Fanatics has received information suggesting that the LEGO Star Wars range for the Han Solo stand alone movie will launch on April 20, 2018.

Despite the production woes, the release date is still currently scheduled for 25 May 2018, which would put the LEGO – and presumably wider – merchandise launch just a month ahead of the movie. This is unusual in recent years, but is similar to how the merchandise was rolled out for the prequels."

This is a good sign. With the toy release schedule still in place, it seems like Lucasfilm and Disney plans to keep its promise to fans and have Han Solo debut in May next year as intended. Though it may sound a little bit tight with production expected to end this September, the schedule still gives the studio a few months to work on post and do quick reshoots if necessary.

Han Solo hits cinemas on May 25, 2018.
