The casting of Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian is one of the most exciting elements of Phil Lord and Chris Miller's untitled Han Solo A Star Wars Story film, and now, the former Community star and rapper just shared what his latest roles means to him.
During a recent interview with the Big Boy's Neighborhood radio show (via Comicbook), Glover said, "It's a really cool, iconic role. You couldn't say no to it."
There's a lot of pressure for Glover, given the unforgettable performance by Lando's initial actor, Billy Dee Williams, in the original Star Wars trilogy. Glover recognized that he has big shoes to fill, saying that fans approached him about it in the months between the casting rumors came up and him eventually signing for the role. "There's a lot of pressure, when you walk down the street, and people are like, 'Yo, I'm excited about that Lando thing."
Glover is ready to honor the first actor who played Lando while giving his unique spin on it. "People are excited about it, but also I get to do it in a new way. I take it really seriously,"
The 33-year-old actor also revealed that he had to experience four separate audtions to get the role. Glover is enthusiastic at focusing on his performance. "I wanted to show them that I know what I'm doing. I definitely came in, and we had to test with people, and see how our chemistry is and stuff."
While we have to wait until next year to see Glover play this iconic Star Wars role, he's already got one part of the character's appearance ready for the film.
"I just grew the mustache, man. It just happened," Glover said with a laugh.
Han Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to release in theaters on May 25, 2018.
