It is probably fair to suggest that the launch of the much-anticipated GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition fell some way short of expectations. For a company that has a long track record of delivering critically acclaimed, commercial smashes, this was little short of a disaster. Rockstar has at least, taken steps to try to address this. As well as penning an apology via the Rockstar Newswire, they have committed to providing updates to improve the games, until they reach the sort of standard we've come to expect from the studio. The first update is already on its way. Here's what we know about the GTA Trilogy Patch - how big it is, what's in it, and anything else worth knowing.

How Big Is This Update?

At the time of writing, Rockstar had yet to publish the size of each update file. However, the update notes, list some 64 different issues that the update is intended to address. These range from the somewhat intense rain effects in San Andreas, to Tommy Vercetti insisting on adopting a T-pose in Vice City.

Arguably, the point here isn't the size of the download, but the sheer number of bugs that they have tried to fix. It's a pretty clear indication of just what a mess the game was in when it was initially launched. And these are almost certainly not the only issues that need addressing.

As we mentioned above, there are 64 different bugs that the patch notes mention as being fixed. It's an enormously long list, covering all three games, across PS4 and PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can see the full list here.

A Note From The Rockstar Games Team

It's definitely worth going back to that note from the Rockstar Games team. As well as offering an apology for the hot mess that the release was, and promising more updates in an effort to bring the games up to an acceptable standard, they mentioned a few other points.

Rockstar upset a lot of people by removing the classic versions of these titles from sale. They have since stated that these will soon be returned to the Rockstar store as a bundle. And in addition, they say that "everyone who has purchased Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for PC from the Rockstar Store through June 30, 2022, will receive these classic versions in their Rockstar Games Launcher library at no additional cost".

Early Reports On The Update

Despite the hard work they've undoubtedly put into this huge update, there are still reports of problems that should have been fixed by this patch. These include invisible bridges, the rain, and many others.

If this is indeed correct, then it's only going to exacerbate the situation. Fans are already angry about the state of these games. But to then deliver fixes that don't work? That's just poking the bear. We'll wait to see what Rockstar does next with this, but so far, they seem to be rather like a novice player on a GTA game. It's just one car crash after another.
