FOX had to cancel a whole bunch of shows recently, but one show managed to salvage itself one final season—Gotham. With the finale drawing to a close, it's confirmed that the network has opted to give Gotham a fifth season coming out this fall.
According to ComicBookMovie, the FOX has also elaborated that Gotham 5 will spend its time focusing on the transformation of Bruce Wayne into Batman:
"The fifth and final season will wrap up this unique origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, which revealed an entirely new chapter that has never been told."
With shows like Lucifer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Last Man on Earth getting canned, some guess that this final season of Gotham will be getting a shortened episode count—probably only 10–13 episodes.
As of now, the finale is focusing on the transformation of Jeremiah into another proto-Joker. Though some fans may be waiting for the show to finally call him that, it has been confirmed by actor Cameron Monaghan himself that Gotham is not allowed to use Joker's name or likeness in any way in the series; it's due to the fact that marketing doesn't want audience members to confuse him with the Joker from the movies. It's the same thing they did with Arrow and Deathstroke.
The finale of Gotham 4 screens on FOX May 17 (8–9 p.m. ET/PT).
