With a lot of fanboys immediately detesting the rumor that Megan Fox might play Poison Ivy in Gotham City Sirens, some fans have shown their desire to have The Martian and Interstellar actress Jessica Chastain for the role instead. Chastain has heard about these fan castings, and she says she'll take the role under certain conditions.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Chastain says:
"I'm interested in all things where the characters are strong and dynamic, and not stereotypes or objects. I like female characters that are subjects, not objects. And so, if Poison Ivy happens to be that, sure. Throw my hat in the ring."
Though Poison Ivy may be a "strong" woman in the comics, her character is definitely defined by her sexuality. Her ability to manipulate and seduce even Batman has made her one memorable villain, but it looks like Chastain may be against that. She goes on:
"If you look at films like Elektra and Aeon Flux, the problem that studios have is that they try to make kickass women very sexualized. They have to be in some catsuit. But if you look at the most incredible female roles, like Ripley in Alien, she is a very sexy woman but she's not wearing a lot of make-up. She's in a T-shirt and jeans. What's sexy about her is how capable she is."
Surely some fans won't be happy if Ivy doesn't act like her trademark seductress, but then again, actresses other than Chastain can always take on the role. My personal fan cast is Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. Now there's a woman who knows how to use her sexuality without seeming weak or objectified.
On another note, I think Ms. Chastain is severely misremembering Alien:
Pictured above: Sexy and capable
Great, now I'm just imagining Sigourney Weaver as Poison Ivy.
No official release date has been announced for Gotham City Sirens, but it could get released next year if Warner Bros is happy with the script.
