Gotham has cast former Walking Dead Star Benedict Samuel and the Mad Hatter for Season 3, Deadline reports. The synopsis reveals that Gotham's version of the villain will be a "talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness" who comes to Gotham with "an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone's guess just how far down the rabbit hole he's willing to go in order to find her."
The Mad Hatter was created by Lew Sayre Schwartz and Bill Finger and first debuted in Batman #49 in 1948. The character is obsessed with Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland and styles himself after the character in that story. He used mind control technology to force people to submit to his will. In the comics, the "Alice" he is obsessed with is generally depicted as his childhood sweetheart (or simply a girl he stalked) rather than his sister, so Gotham's version is a bit different.
In addition to announcing the debut of the Mad Hatter, Gotham has revealed that season 3 will heavily involve The Court of Owls, a secret crime organization created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, who debuted in the second issue of the Batman relaunch in 2011, Zap2It reports. Gotham executive producer John Stevens said the Gotham version of the Court is " this sort of illuminati group that's been pulling the strings behind Gotham for centuries and might be the real culprits in the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, among other things."
The Court of Owls was teased in this creepy new poster from San Diego Comic-Con, which you can see below:
The third season of Gotham will premiere September 19 on Fox.
The Court of Owls and the Mad Hatter are certainly cool villians and it will be interesting to see what the show does with them. What do you think of the new villians coming to Gotham? Do you think the show will do them justice?
