Ghostbusters Will Get a Sequel Despite Lukewarm Opening at U.S. Box Office

The numbers are in for the Ghostbusters reboot from director Paul Feig. As far as U.S. viewers are concerned, it received a rather mixed response that only garnered it US$46 million for its opening weekend.

Ghostbusters, which stars Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig, has been the object of much enthusiasm and anger for some. While some are still incensed by the deviation from the original, others appreciate the reboot's fresh take on the franchise.

And this may be the reason why a reboot is definitely going to happen. Rory Bruer, President of Worldwide Distribution at Sony, told The Wrap that the Ghostbusters franchise is now "alive and well" thanks in part to the reboot. Though he went short of saying that it is an official project, there is a definite tone in his voice.

Sharing his thoughts to The Guardian, Sony's Worldwide Marketing and Distribution President Josh Greenstein also commented that the earnings during the weekend were nothing but a good sign.

"We're ecstatic with this opening. We have successfully restarted an important brand we have lots of room to run in the coming weeks as the big comedy in the marketplace"

For now, Ghostbusters is still behind the likes of The Secret Life of Pets, which had already crossed the US$50 million mark.
