Ghost of Tsushima Film Could Get Black-And-White Kurosawa Mode

There is little doubt that the Ghost of Tsushima film is one of the most highly anticipated live-action adaptations of a hit video game. After all, fans have high hopes after it was announced that John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski will helm the project. So what are Stahelski's plans for the movie? There's a possibility that the film based on the Sucker Punch title will also have the game's black-and-white Kurosawa mode.

Chad Stahelski recently spoke to IGN where he discussed what he learned from working on the John Wick movies and how he will apply the knowledge to Ghost of Tsushima. The filmmaker confirmed that it's all about technology and bold colors.

"With every John Wick, we try to build the world a little bit bigger with the characters and set pieces and lighting," Stahelski said. "Just what we've learned over the past couple years with DI, digital intermediate - the coloring at the end [of production] - and what you can do with new technology and with new Alexa cameras, that's kind of allowed us, hopefully, to take cinematography to the level that Ghost deserves."

"You can see the purples and pinks, and we can push the color and highlights about as far as you can push in Chapter 4," he continued. "So it was a big technological achievement to get the colors that we did in this and to get them to really stick, especially in the theaters you're seeing them in."

But while we're loving the idea of vibrant colors playing an important role in Ghost of Tsushima, the lack of color could also make the adaptation stand out. Gamers know about the Kurosawa Mode, which was added by Sucker Punch as a way to pay tribute to Akira Kurosawa's movies. When asked if the film could be shot in black-and-white, Chad Stahelski confirmed that it might already be in the plans.

"It's definitely a conversation," he teased.

For now, Ghost of Tsushima is still in development and has not yet been given an official release date. In the meantime, John Wick: Chapter 4 is now screening in theaters worldwide.
