In less than a month Ghost in the Shell fans are going to get the very first live-action film adaptation of the classic Japanese cyberpunk media franchise, and though there's been a lot of controversy surrounding the film and its casting choices, so many fans hope that Scarlett Johanssen and the rest of the stars will do the movie some justice.
However, while Paramount Pictures has been trying its best to keep the Ghost in the Shell live-action feature close to its source material, it seems like the film can't help but make a few stray decisions. Earlier today the studio released a new television clip for Ghost in the Shell and while it lasts for a little less than two minutes, the video warns fans of the difference between the upcoming feature and the anime films.
Check it out down here:
Starting off with a sputtering Johanssen, the new trailer shows The Major waking up to her new robotic body as Juliette Binoche's Dr. Ouelet tries to walk her through the events that led to the changes. While comforting and explaining The Major, the doctor then calls her Meera – a name never mentioned in the original anime films. Paramount may have decided to switch The Major's name from the original Motoko Kusanagi to fix the issue of whitewashing, however this slight change may not please fans. For one, many have been wary of Johannsen's casting from the very beginning, and slight change as it may be, it seems like the studio's just making tweaks to justify their decision to put the Avengers star in Motoko's suit. Let's see how the film fares when it releases.
Ghost in the Shell debuts on March 31, 2017.
