GameStop Remains Open Amid Government Lockdown Saying It’s an 'Essential' Business

The government might have put a lockdown in place in response to the fast-spreading novel coronavirus outbreak. However, it seems like GameStop has decided that it's going to keep its business open despite clear instructions that only essential businesses like groceries, healthcare services, and law enforcement are to remain operating during the crisis.

As first reported by Kotaku, GameStop is demanding its employees to keep the business running despite the government lockdown. The company has decided that its business falls under essential retail along with healthcare and groceries.

GameStop sent out a letter to its associates yesterday telling workers to keep operations running, saying that "Due to the products we carry that enable and enhance our customers' experience in working from home, we believe GameStop is classified as essential retail."

The company has also instructed to provide store managers with a letter to law enforcement when local authorities attempt at closing down their stores, telling the police to contact the corporate office before trying to shut down their business.

"Thank you for what you are doing to keep us all safe. If you have questions about our store's hours, operations, or policies, could I ask you to please call our corporate office," the letter reads.

These demands by GameStop sounds preposterous. This adds to recent news where the company instructed its associates and employees to purchase their own hand sanitizers and cleaning supplies out of their very own pockets.

It's devastating how GameStop is treating its employees, Not only is the company breaking the lockdown placed by the government, but it's also risking the health and welfare of its workers.
