Game of Thrones Will Have Supersized Battles & Episodes

When you finally have dragons on the battlefield, you know you have to up the stakes—and that's exactly what Game of Thrones creators are planning to do this seventh season.

It's hard to top past fights; between bloody and excessively expansive extras fighting in the Battle of the Bastards, there's something about this fight for the Iron Throne that makes it even more exciting and full of action. And what fitting way to execute this than to bring everything in, props and budget-wise.

This is exactly what the team is doing this season. According to Paula Fairfield, sound designer for Game of Thrones, who spoke at Con of Thrones (via Winter is Coming), the bars on the budget have been removed.

"Each year, they get a budget for a few more dragon shots and they have to be very careful how they use them. Not so much this year… There's not so much having to hold back and plan, because there's a lot of dragon action this year, and it's fabulous."

The result is an action-packed and aptly described supersized battles, ones that would supposedly make the likes of the Massacre at Hardhome seem like "child's play."

From the looks of it, the producers are certainly giving it everything, so much so that perhaps this season will open the series to more explosive scenes. Another tease in point: the fact that season 8 will be shorter at six episodes, but more expansive to be considered as "feature-length" shows.

That last bit was something that Fairfield only speculates about. But if the creators are trying to do something extravagant, an ender season that would be at par with dragon fights would be the best way to end Game of Thrones.

You can judge the production yourself when Game of Thrones returns on HBO on July 16.
