Earlier this month HBO announced the highly anticipated release date of Game of Thrones by making fans watch a melting block of ice. The release date announcement event was broadcasted live on Facebook, and it took quite a while to get to the date.
Now, in an interview with The Daily Beast,Game of Thrones' Jaime Lannister star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau reveals that the fantasy series' showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss both thought that the whole "Fire and Ice" ice block melting stunt was just "embarrassing."
"I spoke to Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] about that and they were like, 'Oh god… That's embarrassing,'" Coster-Waldau told the publication. "Everyone was like, 'What's going to happen?' 'What's going to happen?!' 'It's melting!' 'It crashed!' 'Oh my god!' It's like, just walk away… just walk away. It's just a date!
"You know, I was actually thinking, 'Is there going to be a backlash and people will think, 'F**k you guys for that!'" but that's really happened with every time the show kills off a major character: 'Never again! F**k you! I'm never going to watch this show!' and, you know, they keep coming back."
While some fans tolerated the release date announcement, being forced to watch a block of ice slowly melt away can be pure agony to a fan. Imagine the anticipation and energy building up, only to be diffused while watching water roll of a giant block of ice, hoping that it finally gets to the release date.
