Game of Thrones Premiere Ratings Break Streaming Viewership Record

Streaming is the future of Game of Thrones.

The ratings of Game of Thrones' season 6 premiere aren't what viewers would expect. The highly anticipated premiere aired Sunday and the results of the ratings show that the Emmy-winning fantasy drama is top in streaming viewership record. However, the same cannot be said in TV ratings.

Fortunately, when viewers for both TV and streaming are combined, The Red Woman is at an all-time best with 10.7 million in number. This includes the show's on-air premiere, first two repeats, as well as early returns from HBO Go and HBO Now. The numbers do not include HBO's special free preview weekend screenings.

Total viewership is still a success since the percentage went up to 9 from season 5's premiere with only 9.8 million viewers. The new record shows an increase in the number of viewers from the season 5 finale with 10.3 million.

While the ratings appear record-breaking, according to EW, most of HBO's viewers have shifted from cable and satellite package to streaming services.

It's perhaps already expected that viewers would eventually be shifting from the traditional cable to modern streaming services. In any case, Game of Thrones is one of the few well-crafted series to date. I don't think the show will have any problems raking in viewers.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays on HBO.
