HBO's Game of Thrones has had a number of cameos by well-known musicians over the seasons. There was that appearance by Coldplay's Will Champion, that cameo by Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, that one appearance by Sigur Ros, and another by Mastodon.

Though the series is currently preparing to enter its second to the last season, it seems production plans to have the cameo tradition moving on, bringing popular singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran for a guest spot on the series.

Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff made the announcement at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas last Sunday (via Screenrant), revealing that one of the show's stars, Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) was getting one heck of a surprise.

Apparently the young British actress is a big fan of Sheeran, and the producers have been trying to get the musician to cameo just for Maisie for quite some time.

"For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it."

There's no news on which character Sheeran's going to play – since the surprise was intended for Maisie, then maybe he's one of the people she meets in season 7, or someone that she kills. Whatever it is, we're pretty sure that the musicians fans are going to keep their eyes peeled for the English musician.

Game of Thrones season 7 premieres on July 16, 2017.
