Game of Thrones Battle of the Bastards Used A Lot Less CGI Than You'd Expect

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from Season 6, Episode 9 of Game of Thrones, 'Battle of the Bastards'

The odds were stacked against Jon Snow when he decided to take on Lord Ramsay Bolton in the Battle of Winterfell. Jon's army is only half the size of Bolton's, he can't win the war of the minds that Bolton is excellent at, and his brother Rickon Sark is still being held captive in the hands of the enemy.

The Battle of the Bastards, which is definitely the most epic sequences I've seen on a television show, showed an incredible spectacle with its blood, mud, horses, and bodies. The episode is epic, and it's worth watching again to see the intricate details they put in the scene. You can read our full review here.

HBO has released a clip that shows how showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and director Miguel Sapochnik pulled off this intense scene. And you'll find out that most of it features live action sequences, with a remarkable camera work, 80 well-trained horses, and choreographed stunts. A lot of fake bodies were used to create the pile of corpses. It's also interesting to see how they shot the scene when Jon Snow was beating Ramsay Bolton to a pulp. Watch the clip here:

One more episode to go for Season 6 of Game of Thrones. The show returns on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 26. You can watch the preview trailer here.
