It's been a while since the Gambit movie was announced; the film was set to release November of last year, but with all the news about directors leaving the project, fans thought the movie was in development hell. Producer Simon Kinberg has given an update on the film, and he says that lead star Channing Tatum is still pretty much committed to making Gambit happen.
According to ComicBook.com, Kinberg said:
"It's in active development… It's a movie that we hope will be ready to go by the end of this year and shoot next year. We have two or three X-Men related movies this year so it can wait for a moment. The process has been that Channing [Tatum] is as determined about getting the character right as Ryan Reynolds was about Deadpool and Hugh [Jackman] was about this Logan movie. We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise."
With the movie set to start production sometime next year, it could be a while before fans finally get to see Gambit on the silver screen. Hopefully the X-Men franchise will be rejuvenated anew, what with Apocalypse not doing so great, and the only characters holding up the title being Deadpool and Wolverine.
I personally don't think Gambit should be a solo movie. Despite Remy LeBeau being an interesting character, I think he works best as part of an ensemble or as a foil for the upright hero — just like Han Solo in the first Star Wars.
No release date has been set for Gambit, but production is set to start late this year or sometime in 2018.
