There's going to a movie based on the phone app Fruit Ninja, Geek Tyrant reports. The app has a simple premise- the player slices up fruit like a ninja. The better a player slices up fruit and avoids objects like bombs, the higher their score is.
Now New Line Cinema has acquired rights to the game and is intending to make a movie based off the game. J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, who worked together on How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack, will be writing the script. The movie will reportedly focus on "a group of misfits recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world".
Producer Trip Vinson (San Andreas) has partnered with Halfbrick Studios for the project. Other executive producers are Sam White and Tara Farney. Alex Ehrman is an associate producer.
Fruit Ninja is the second best-selling ioS game ever. It boasts over 100 million downloads. After the Angry Birds movie, it is not a surprise studios are looking into more games based on apps.
I honestly have no idea how the premise of Fruit Ninja could work for a movie. Even as a comedy, it seems like too much. But maybe I'll be surprised. What about you? Do you think there's hope for a movie?
