Frozen Fans Want Elsa to Have a Girlfriend, Launches New Campaign for Disney Sequel

For a while now there have been fan theories suggesting that Frozen's Elsa could be a lesbian.

Now, Frozen fans want to make it official. A new Twitter campaign has gone viral calling producers of the animated blockbuster hit to make Elsa a lesbian in the forthcoming sequel.

The campaign began after Twitter user Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeted on Saturday:

I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.

She quickly followed this with another post accompanied by a hashtag that is now taking the internet by storm. Moncada's next tweet read:

Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend

In an article for MTV, Moncada wrote an explained the reason she wanted to petition for Elsa having a girlfriend.

The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we've never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.
...many in the LGBT community view Frozen as a metaphor for the experience of coming out and accepting who you are. Yet Elsa, the film's protagonist, will probably end up with a male prince or king in the upcoming Frozen sequel.

Many people have voiced their support for the campaign:

However, the trending campaign isn't free from detractors:

It's worth noting that this news comes after GLAAD also campaigned for Disney to include LGBT characters in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

For the most part, several cast and crew of Star Wars are already showing their support for the cause.

Actor John Boyega did say previouslythat a romance between Finn and Poe could happen. Mark Hamill also expressed his openness towards his character, Luke Skywalker, being gay. The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams claimed in February that Star Warswithout gay characters is "insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive." In addition, he and his production company, Bad Robot, have placed a strategic hiring systems within the company to improve diversity in Hollywood.

As for Marvel-Disney, last month, the companies have shown support for the LGBT community when they released a statement saying they will stop production in Georgia if the anti-gay bill in the state gets passed.

It may be a long way off before discrimination is abolished, but with all these recent statements and support from big companies and famous stars in the media industry, in this case Disney, it wouldn't be impossible if we will be seeing LGBT characters in Disney films sometime in the future, perhaps even Frozen 2.

Personally, it wouldn't be so bad. It still is Disney. If some people find it unacceptable to see two women showing intimacy in an animated film, I think at the most, Disney will only be showing the purity involved in two women loving each other, intimacy not necessarily involved.

As I've said in a previous article, as long as the studios are able to come up with great stories, I don't see why LGBT characters can't be part of Disney films.

What do you think?

Frozen 2 is expected to be released before 2018.
