Ewan McGregor Hints on Possibility of Obi-Wan Kenobi Spin-off & Trilogy

Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi may have had a very little voice cameo on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it looks like Disney/Lucasfilm is already planning on an anthology series focusing on the fan-favorite character.

The Scottish actor hinted as much in a recent interview with Collider. The site interviewed McGregor for the upcoming biopic Miles Ahead. Naturally, the interview touched upon the subject of the actor's return to the Star Wars universe.

Responding to the interviewer's statement that fans have been clamoring for an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, McGregor said:

I'd very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there's a story there. I think that's the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one.
The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec's Obi-Wan Kenobi because there's a—I don't know how long he's in the desert there, but it's got to be twenty or thirty years.

The actor's answer to an important question is pretty much a giveaway for the possibility of the film. Asked whether Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy spoke to him about the movie, the 45-year-old actor answered:

I'm not sure I'm at liberty to say, really, but I'm very interested in doing that. That would be great. Maybe there's even a trilogy! (laughs)

The actor was also asked of the possibility of him playing a Force ghost on Episode VIII or IX, he said he'd be up for it, but that he wouldn't know whether it would happen:

I don't know anything about it. I'm really not in the picture with the Star Wars trilogy. As far as I know, I would be Alec Guinness by now, so I don't know how that would work. I really don't know and I haven't had any discussions with anyone about it.
To play Obi-Wan Kenobi again would be something I would love to do in one of the spinoff movies. If that were to happen in one of their trilogies, I would be up for that, but I don't know how that would happen. I'm sure some of the Star Wars fans would come up with an idea of how that could happen.

Check out the entire interview below:

The Force ghost concept may be a tad bit hard to insert into the new trilogy's narrative. Doing a Force ghost of a young Obi-Wan instead of Alec Guinness' version would be detrimental to the continuity of the films.

However, I don't see the spin-off series far from happening. Fans may have been divided about the Star Wars prequel trilogy ever since they were released, but if there's one thing they could agree on, it's that Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi was among the reasons why the films worked. I agree. I think he's the best thing about the prequels.

I would very much like to see him wield a lightsaber again, and maybe see him battling Darth Maul once more.

Would you like Ewan McGregor to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an Obi-Wan spin-off?
