Ewan McGregor Clears Up Obi-Wan Kenobi Solo Film Rumors

There's no denying that Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi had been one of the highlights in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, so when the 45-year-old Scottish actor mentioned the possibility of an Obi-Wan spin-off in an interview last month, fans went wild.

The actor said at the time that he'd "very much like to do one (movie)."

He added:

I think there's a story there. I think that's the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec's Obi-Wan Kenobi because there's a—I don't know how long he's in the desert there, but it's got to be twenty or thirty years.

Naturally, fans gave no second thoughts about the actor's statements at the time and many took it as a sign that an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off is entirely possible.

Well, now McGregor is clarifying what's really up with the film and whether there is in fact a discussion on it.

In a new interview with Collider for the actor's upcoming drama Last Days in the Desert, McGregor was asked if Lucasfilm commented on his Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off comments.

The actor clarified:

If they asked me to, I would be happy to. But it looks like I am campaigning for it, just because I get asked about it, all the time. So, I would like it to be known that I don't bring it up, at these interviews, of my own free will. I only respond to questions I'm asked to. I don't know anything about it. They've never approached me about it.

Unfortunately, as much as we'd like to believe that Obi-Wan's popularity would somehow catch the attention of Lucasfilm, forcing them to think of making a movie about the legendary Jedi Master, it looks like they haven't really thought about it.

It's kind of intriguing though. I refuse to believe that Disney-Lucasfilm hadn't thought about it. Perhaps they're just coming up with a perfect plan on how to market the film. I'm still hopeful that a spin-off about Obi-Wan gets made. He's undoubtedly one of the greatest characters in Star Wars and nobody would want to miss that film.
