Edgar Wright's Baby Driver Beats Transformers In Its Opening Weekend

It must feel good to be Edgar Wright right now. With his latest movie Baby Driver becoming a critical darling at the box office, Wright's movie has overshadowed the latest entry into one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood: Transformers.

This was confirmed by Fandango's managing editor, Erik Davis on Twitter:

Just for comparison, Baby Driver had an estimated budget of $40M while Transformers: The Last Knight had a whopping $217M. That must mean a major disappointment for Paramount Pictures.

I'm really happy that Wright is getting the attention he deserves. After working for eight years on Ant-Man, Wright sadly left the project due to creative differences. Baby Driver is his first movie since the falling out, and it's great that everyone is loving it. Hopefully this opens more doors for him; I'm personally hoping they hire him to direct The Flash—the project has already lost two directors, and Wright's quickfire shooting style and humor is perfect for the Scarlet Speedster.

As for Transformers: The Last Knight, some (if not most) audience members are already feeling a bit tired of Michael Bay milking the franchise for everything it's got. This is said to be his last one in the series, and a Bumblebee prequel movie is said to be in the works with Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight at the helm.

You can catch both Baby Driver and Transformers: The Last Knight in cinemas today.
