Dragon Quest Character Designer Akira Toriyama Shares Thoughts for 30th Anniversary

Dragon Quest character designer Akira Toriyama shared his thoughts for the game's 30th anniversay, Anime News Networkreports. He provided his insight in a letter that was shared on the Dragon Quest 30th: On to New Legends television special. The special aired on Japanese television last Thursday to celebrate the anniversary.

Toriyama wrote that he never thought the series would last for 30 years and become so popular. He designed over 500 characters for the Dragon Quest game. He describes his time on the series as "fun and hard work".

However, it's only gotten harder over the years. He wrote that "Each time I repeat, it is steadily getting harder. It's a situation where I'm really drawing with every trick I know."

Sadly, some of Akira's more unusual designs are rejected. He misses the freedom of the old days, but is devoted to working on Dragon Quest XI. The game will be released in Japan this year prior to the 30th anniversary, which is on May 27.

In addition to his work on Dragon Quest, Toriyama is known as the creator of hit manga Dragon Ball and its follow up Dragon Ball Z. He has also designed characters for games like Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon. Dragons seem to be a theme.

It's incredible that Dragon Quest has been around for so long. I hope the new game is good. What do you think?
