Dragon Age is getting its own animated series on Netflix. Dragon Age: Absolution has just been announced and the upcoming anime based on BioWare's successful game franchise is coming to the streaming service later this year!
The new anime was announced during the last day of Netflix Geeked Week where the first teaser for the show was dropped. Dragon Age: Absolution introduces several new characters who haven't been featured in the games and the teaser promises a lot of major action.
There aren't a lot of details about Dragon Age: Absolution right now. However, it was confirmed that the story will be set in Tevinter, an empire within the Dragon Age universe. The series is also created by Mairghread Scott who will serve as showrunner. Red Dog Culture House will produce the six-episode anime in collaboration with BioWare.
For now, the characters who will appear in the series have not yet been announced but fans can expect "an ensemble of new characters inspired by, and authentic to, Dragon Age lore; including elves, mages, knights, Qunari, Red Templars, demons, and other special surprises."
BioWare released the first game Dragon Age: Origins in 2009 and the franchise has since expanded to six titles in the main series, numerous spin-off games, an anime film, books, a webtoon series, action figures, and even a tabletop RPG.
Dragon Age: Absolution isn't the only major content from the franchise to be announced this year. Earlier in June, BioWare announced the latest game in the series will be called Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and will follow Solas, who was first introduced in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game began development back in 2015 so fans are delighted to learn that it now has an official title and will be moving forward.
Dragon Age: Absolution has not yet been given an official release date but is expected to stream on Netflix in December 2022.
