Doctor Strange’s Tilda Swinton Talks About Her Take on & Interest in The Ancient One

Among the characters in Doctor Strange, perhaps one of the most controversial would be The Ancient One. Following so many issues involving race and white washing, the character wasn't exactly put to good light as say, Stephen Strange or even Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecilius.

However, Marvel's own Kevin Feige has already spoken about their decision to cast Tilda Swinton for the role. Now, speaking to Marvel, Swinton talks more about her journey in preparing for and portraying Doctor Strange's mentor.

Swinton revealed that one of the most interesting aspects of The Ancient One is the idea of immortality, the good and the bad side of it. And how, according to her, it blows up the idea of limits and boundaries.

"I'm really interested in the idea of long, long life and transformation and immortality. I'm very much drawn to these stories. This is a huge, great story and the possibility of living beyond everything."

For those who have already seen the numerous trailers, Swinton's The Ancient One was far from what the comics portrayed: an old Asian man. That's not to say that Swinton didn't undergo any transformations herself—as if the shaved head wasn't that much of a clue.

According to the actress, this was a necessity to capture the fluidity of portraying the role. She does fit the eccentric world of Doctor Strange.

More than the physicality of the role, Swinton also touched on what The Ancient One's relationship with Strange. More than a master and student, there's also a level of expectation that goes beyond achievement of a status.

"It's important to the Ancient One that Doctor Strange does cut it, because the Ancient One needs a successor or certainly needs, you could say, a son."

There will be a lot going on with the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the introduction of Doctor Strange. Elements magic and mind-bending will certainly take it into a new direction. Though we may still expect the same brand of fluid humor from the actors, too.

Doctor Strange will be out in theaters on Nov. 4.
