Doctor Strange’s Crew Teases Powers Behind the Costume

The essence of Doctor Strange as superhero may be about the struggle to reinvent the self after a big tragedy. But that doesn't mean that we can't find anything super about his costume either.

While other Marvel supers have very functionally useful costumes—think Iron Man's Jarvis-power suits and Cap's shield—Doctor Strange's wardrobe is more magical than just functional.

Entertainment Weekly dives into the set of Doctor Strange to dish out what exactly makes each of the pieces tick, and what powers may be lurking within each one.

The most popular, the Cloak of Levitation, is the source of Strange's, well, levitation. The cloak enables him to fly in the movie—but apparently, behind the scenes, it provided very little convenience when it comes to letting Cumberbatch go for a bathroom break.

Next is the blue outfit that was revealed to be a denim cloth for his pants and coat. According to Marvel costume designer Alexandra Byrne, the design was inspired by a Chinese jacket she had purchased from East Asia.

Of course, not all of the costume pieces have any functional point to them. For instance, the sharp-eyed viewers will see that Doctor Strange's outfit is accented by several belts looped around the actor's waist. Apparently, no, they're not there to bind or limit some uncontrollable power—they just look good.

But perhaps the nicest little hint would be the Eye of Agamotto, the relic necklace that we see lighted up in most official images revealed. While fans have already speculated that this piece will hold the key to adding another Infinity Stone into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel's Kevin Feige has also shot down seeing an Infinity Stone in the movie.

As far as the design for the amulet goes, Feige did confirm that the design was heavily lifted from the original comics.

"It was so cool—we knew we didn't have to improve greatly upon what was in the comics for it to be interesting for a modern audience."

Doctor Strange will be out in theaters on Nov. 4.
