Disney’s Star Wars Movies Box Office Earnings Have Pushed Past The Price Of Lucasfilm Sale

It looks like Disney has finally been able to earn back the money it spent on purchasing Lucasfilm back in 2012 with the box office total of the three Star Wars movies that it's produced the past three years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi has just reached a total gross of $4.06 billion at the worldwide box office. That's a number slightly above the $4.05 billion that the Mickey Mouse company handed over to George Lucas for the purchase of Lucasfilm five years ago.

Of course this number only accounts for the ticket sales of the films that Disney's made with all three of its Star Wars movies. The profits from all the different Star Wars merchandise that the company's also sold after buying off Lucasfilm is an entirely different story. Star Wars toys and other products sell like hot potatoes, so it's more than likely that the studio's already profited from its Lucasfilm acquisition.

Seeing how strong the franchise is now, it seems like Lucas may have made a mistake handing off his studio. The Star Wars franchise is a powerful asset and Disney made the right call buying it off when they had the chance.

Lucasfilm's newest sequel trilogy installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
