Disney Shuts Down Development On Jack And The Beanstalk Animated Movie ‘Gigantic’

Ever since the release of Tangled, it seems that Walt Disney Animation has found a new Renaissance what with the successful releases of films like Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia, and Moana. The studio had a movie called Gigantic which was an adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk set for a release in 2020, but for now it seems that Disney has shelved the project and stopped all active development on it.

Talking to THR, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios president Ed Catmull:

"It's impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn't working… With Gigantic, we've come to that point, and although it's a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now. We are focusing our energies on another project that has been in the works, which we'll be sharing more about soon, now set for Thanksgiving 2020."

As it stands, Disney Animation is working on the release of Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 in 2018 and Frozen 2 in 2019. Though I'm still looking forward to those movies, I would rather much prefer something original instead of a sequel or spinoff.

Hopefully Gigantic doesn't stay in development hell forever. Other projects like King of the Elves and Newt are now inactive titles for Disney, but with the way Disney puts their own spin of classic fairytales, I was pretty much looking forward to what they had in store for Gigantic.

The next Disney Animated film in line is Wreck-It Ralph 2 which comes out Nov. 21, 2018.
