Disney Rolls Out The First Images of A Wrinkle In Time’s Magical Three Mrs. W’s

Madeleine L'Engle's critically acclaimed 1963 science-fiction and fantasy novel A Wrinkle in Time is getting a film adaptation from Disney next year and it looks like the studio's decided to roll out the first few photos from the film a few days before they head out on to this year's D23.

Showcasing the cast of Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time, the images posted by Entertainment Weekly features the three "Mrs. W's" – Mrs. Which played by Oprah Winfrey, Mrs. Whatsit played by Reese Witherspoon and and Mrs. Who played by Mindy Kaling. A fantasy epic focused on Meg, an ordinary teenager who finds herself on a cosmic mission with these three mystical celestial beings to help her find her scientist father played by Chris Pine.

In an interview with the publication, Duvernay talks about how she was struck by L'Engle's novel and how she's excited to work on the film.

"I saw so much beauty in it, but also so much meaning. [L'Engle was] a very radical thinker and she embedded her sense of what society should and could be in this piece, and a lot of it I agree with. And through that, the story of this girl saving the world and being out there in the universe slaying the darkness, it also says a lot about slaying our own dragons."

"The first image [I had in my head] was to place a brown girl in that role of Meg, a girl traveling to different planets and encountering beings and situations that I'd never seen a girl of color in. All of those scenes struck my fancy, and then it was also something that [Disney VP of production] Tendo Nagenda said to me, which I'll never forget. One of the things that really made me want to read it was when he said, ‘Ava, imagine what you would do with the worlds.' Worlds! ‘Planets no one's ever seen or heard of,' he said. There aren't any other black women who have been invited to imagine what other planets in the universe might look and feel like. I was interested in that and in a heroine that looked like the girls I grew up with."

It looks like Disney fans are going in for another magical ride next year and we're hoping that it'll be big. A Wrinkle In Time's headed to this year's D23 and it looks like the film's first trailer going to premiere at the exposition.

D23 is going to run in Anaheim from July 14 to July 16, 2017.
