Denis Villeneuve Explains How Blade Runner 2049 Got Its Hologram Sex Scene

Like its predecessor, Blade Runner 2049 was a visually stunning film that featured so many beautiful sequences and set pieces with director Denis Villeneuve opting for practical effects and real sets in place of CGI.

However, it seems like the filmmaker couldn't avoid using CGI on the holographic sex scene shared by the female hologram character Joi (Ana de Armas), the replicant blade runner Officer K (Ryan Gosling) and the pleasure model Marriette (Mackenzie Davis). The "threesome" shared by the group ended up as one of the most visually stunning scenes in Blade Runner 2049, with Joi trying to synchronize with Marriette in order to make love with her partner, Officer K.

The love-making sequence was a tender moment that reminded one of Spike Jonze's Her and visuals of Joi clumsily trying to merge with Marriette while getting intimate with K stunned fans.

Now, in an interview with Vulture, Villeneuve discussed what he wanted for the scene and the technical effort he had to put in to develop the sequence. According to the director, the un-synchronized movements of the actresses was a deliberate choice and it was a difficult for him and his editing team to get the scene right.

"The way eyes move, or a hand … I felt the smaller the gesture, the more erotic and powerful the scene would be. … I loved the idea that you were feeling both presences of both women at the same time and that sometimes, it was like you were feeling a third woman."

The filmmaker explained the process of filming the scene, saying the Davis and Armas made alternating attempts at mimicking each other's movements. After shooting the sequences separately, it took the visual effects year "well over a year" to combine their shots, adding scanned 3D models of the two in order to have their image blend together.

Despite being a box office bomb, Blade Runner 2049 is a visual masterpiece that's received a lot of great reviews from fans and critics.

Blade Runner 2049 is currently screening in cinemas.
