It's official. Deadpool has the highest opening weekend in Russia.
The comic book film already broke a lot of records at the box office following its release. The 20th Century Fox film got the biggest February weekend, biggest R-rated opening, and the biggest President's Day four-day weekend.
Now, the Merc with a Mouth can take pride in beating one of the most popular films in history – Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in Russia at least.
Deadpool raked in $13.1 million during its weekend debut at the Russian box office, making it the film with the highest grossing opening weekend.
As for TFA, the movie had the fleeting record during its December debut. The seventh installment to the Star Wars franchise, TFA earned $12.3 million in Russia during opening weekend.
I have a feeling Deadpool will only continue to shatter records as days pass, but considering that Deadpool was banned in China and that The Force Awakens already earned billions, it's highly unlikely that the Merc With A Mouth would catch up to the power of the Force. Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War will probably make a huge impact at the box office, and might come close to beating Deadpool, but we'll have to wait and see.
Deadpool is now showing in theaters.
