Deadpool Breaks Record As Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie In The World

It may have been a month since the release of Deadpool, but that doesn't mean Ryan Reynold's superhero film is done making headlines and breaking box office records.

The latest word about Deadpool is that it is now the highest grossing R-rated film in history. Just this week alone, the Merc with a Mouth raked in an estimated $5 million domestically, but at the worldwide box office, the movie has already bagged nearly $745 million. The last R-rated film that held the record for global box office was The Matrix Reloaded with $742.1 million.

According to Box Office Mojo, Deadpool is third at the domestic box office for R-rated films, sitting just a few million away from American Sniper, which is at the number two spot. With the movie still fairly fresh, it could easily top American Sniper in a week or so.

Meanwhile, the number 1 one R-rated film at the domestic box office is The Passion of the Christ, which leads by a solid $20 million.

Only time will tell if Wade Wilson will manage to outdo this one.

Deadpool had been a risky project because comic book movies have been universally been rated PG-13 over the past couple of years. Deadpool, being rated R, had a limited audience. Fortunately, after years of convincing and help from celebrities like Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds and the rest of the Deadpool team was given the green light by Fox. Now, it appears that risk was well-taken. Not only is Deadpool killing it at the box office, the movie has set a new standard for the genre. Just days following Deadpool's release in theaters, it was revealed that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have an R-rated version.

Deadpool currently holds the title of highest grossing movie in 2016, but with Batman v Superman raking in more than half of Deadpool's total during opening weekend despite negative reviews, that could change soon.
