Deadpool 2 Director Says He Loves The Movie’s “Artistic” And “Surreal” Moments

Deadpool 2 doesn't just have the Merc with a Mouth's (Ryan Reynolds) signature brassy humor, it also has a lot of strange and trippy sequences. The unorthodox have always been a part of the Merc with a Mouth's character, and the original Deadpool movie had so many cartoon sequences where Wade Wilson gets stabbed in the head and receives other violent attacks.

According to Deadpool 2 director David Leitch, those strange sequences are what makes the Deadpool franchise stand out. Speaking in an interview with Albert Ching from CBR, the filmmaker says that he's fully embraced the wacky violence of the film's original source material – the comic books.

"I love graphic novels and comic books, obviously," Leitch explained. "But I really have fallen in love with this world and this universe. Down the road, I hope there's another chapter for me — within Deadpool, X-Force, I don't know, but it would be fun to be involved. I don't think there will ever be a sandbox that's so liberating as an artist, for me. Because action's important in it, and that's my specialty. Comedy is important, and that's something I love. But there's also this artistic, surreal stuff that you can do only in Deadpool. You couldn't get away with it in another Marvel movie, but Deadpool, you can take him to the afterlife, you can do whatever."

Leitch does know how to do his comic book action scenes right. Or at least just action sequences. After all, the filmmaker just came from directing Atomic Blond, a hard-hitting espionage film starring Charlize Theron. Given his experience, we're pretty sure we're going to get some crazy moments in Deadpool 2 - hopefully even crazier than the original raunchy, R-Rated movie. We want nothing but the best from our favorite filth-spewing superhero.

Deadpool 2 is set to premiere this Friday, May 18.
